Stones of CeylonRough & Cut

The business

About

A dealer in rough and cut precious gemstones, working out of Sydney and buying at source.

We buy rough and cut stones — Ceylon sapphire above all, alongside spinel, alexandrite and chrysoberyl, zircon, garnet and the occasional taaffeite — and sell them on to collectors, cutters and jewellers who want to know exactly what they are buying.

The stock is small and turns over. Everything here is a single stone or a single parcel; when it sells it is gone, and the listing stays up as a record of what has passed through rather than being quietly deleted.

Not a marketplace

Every stone on this site is ours. There are no third-party sellers, no consignment listings and no bidding — which means the standard behind every description is the same standard, and if something is wrong there is one person to take it up with rather than a platform and a stranger.

That is the real difference between buying here and buying at auction. On a marketplace the quality and the honesty vary listing by listing, because the seller varies listing by listing. Here they don’t.

How we buy

At source wherever possible — rough out of the gravels, parcels from the dealers who work them, cut stones from cutters we know. Buying that far up the chain is what makes it possible to price honestly at the other end, and it is also the only way to know what a stone actually is rather than what the last three sellers said it was.

How we sell

The whole proposition of this business is that the description is true. Treatment stated on every stone. Origin marked as fact or as opinion, never blurred. An untreated claim only where a laboratory report backs it, and where there is no report we say that instead of leaving a helpful silence.

That is not modesty, it is the commercial argument. At this end of the market the description is the product — two stones that look identical in a photograph can differ in price by a factor of five on the strength of a single line on a report. A dealer whose descriptions can be relied on is worth more than one whose stones happen to be prettier.

How we describe stones sets out the standard in full, including what we will not claim without evidence.
