Treatment terminology
Treatment wording is a claim about evidence. ‘Untreated’ is never an empty checkbox or an assumption from appearance.
- No indications of treatment
- A positive claim, not a default. The listing names the report, measurement or other evidence on which it rests.
- Provenance-only treatment claim
- The acquisition history supports the statement, but available testing cannot conclusively establish it. This is not presented as laboratory proof.
- Heated
- Evidence supports conventional heat. Residue, filling or diffusion is stated separately where present or suspected.
- Heat with residue
- Heat accompanied by flux or glass residue in fissures. It is not collapsed into the less specific word ‘heated’.
- Diffusion
- A surface or lattice diffusion process is disclosed by name when supported by evidence.
- Filled
- Glass, resin, oil or another filler is disclosed, with the known extent and evidence basis.
- Irradiated
- Irradiation is disclosed when reported or otherwise supported.
- Coated
- A surface coating or backing is disclosed and care limitations are stated.
- Undetermined
- The honest answer when the evidence does not settle treatment. It never means untreated.
How it appears on a listing
A production listing carries the value, source type, source reference, recorder, date, verification state, confidence, public wording and any conflict. A supplier statement, owner assessment and laboratory report remain visibly different.
